Message from the Chair for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - 2025

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) reaffirms its commitment to advancing accessible transportation for all Canadians.

Transportation is more than just movement—it is connection, opportunity, and independence. For persons living with a disability, equitable access to transportation is essential to full participation in society.

Accessibility is a fundamental human right, and the CTA continues to work diligently to remove barriers and promote inclusive travel experiences across Canada’s national transportation system.

Over the past year, the CTA has taken meaningful steps to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with accessible transportation, including those of mobility aid users. The CTA continually engages with disability communities and transportation service providers by:

  • conducting collaborative research;
  • developing guidance, tools and training;
  • collecting data; and
  • advancing accessibility internationally.

The CTA recognizes that accessibility is a journey, not a destination. It requires ongoing dialogue, innovation, and accountability. As Chair of the CTA, I am proud of the progress we have made—and I am equally committed to the work that lies ahead.

The CTA remains dedicated to listening, learning, and leading change—guided by the voices and lived experiences of persons living with a disability, in order to build a transportation system that is not only accessible, but empowering.
