APPLICATION by Hughes Offshore and Shipping Services Inc., pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence.

APPLICATION

Hughes Offshore and Shipping Services Inc. applied, through its representative, for a licence to use the “BBC EMERALD”, a multipurpose heavy lifter vessel registered in Antigua and Barbuda, to load and transport turbine no. 2 and its subsea base from Pictou, Nova Scotia to Saint John, New Brunswick, where it will then facilitate the repair of turbine no. 1, before finalizing the assembly of both turbines. The vessel will perform heavy lift operations, in both ports, of two turbines, each 16 metres in diameter and weighing 320 metric tons, and one subsea base weighing 444 metric tons. The activity will commence on or about September 21 and will end on or about October 21, 2016.

FACTS AND DETERMINATION

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry and no Canadian ships were offered. Therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity.

The Agency is providing this determination to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to consider whether to issue the licence. This Decision is not an authority to operate.
