August 11, 2010

August 11, 2010

APPLICATION by Desgagnés Transarctik Inc., pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence.

File No. W9125/D9/10-1

APPLICATION

Desgagnés Transarctik Inc. applied for a licence to use an unknown vessel to deliver prefabricated houses and building materials from Sainte-Catherine, Quebec to Kuujjuaq, Kangiqsujuaq, Puvirnituq, Inukjuak, Umiujaq and Kuujjuarapik, Quebec commencing on or about August 6 and ending on or about September 15, 2010.

ISSUE

Is there a suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity?

FACTS AND DETERMINATION

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry. On July 23, 2010, an objection was filed with the Agency by Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping Inc. (NEAS), stating that it had Canadian flagged vessels suitable and available to perform the activity described in the application. NEAS withdrew its objection on August 10, 2010.

No other Canadian ships were offered. Therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity.

The Agency is providing this determination to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to consider whether to issue the licence. This Decision is not an authority to operate.
