File No. W9125/N9/00-1

Navitrans Shipping Agencies Inc., on behalf of Compagnie des Îles du Ponant, has applied to the Minister of National Revenue for a licence to operate the service set out in the title. The matter was referred to the Canadian Transportation Agency (hereinafter the Agency) on January 26, 2000.

Following its review of a previous application by Navitrans Shipping Agencies Inc., on behalf of Compagnie des Îles du Ponant, for a licence to use "Le Levant" to operate one 15-day cruise from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Toronto, Ontario, via Chéticamp, Charlottetown, Percé, Saguenay-Tadoussac, Montréal, Kingston, the Thousand Islands, Port Weller, Windsor, Erie and the Welland Canal during the period commencing on September 9, 2000 and ending September 24, 2000; one 4-day cruise from Toronto, Ontario, to Montréal, Quebec, via Kingston and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and one 6-day cruise from Montréal, Quebec, to Baddeck, Nova Scotia, via Québec, Saguenay-Tadoussac, the St. Lawrence River, Percé and Charlottetown during the period commencing on October 8, 2000 and ending on October 17, 2000, the Agency, in its Decision No. 686-W-1999 dated December 9, 1999, determined that there was no suitable Canadian ship available to provide the service or perform the activities described in that application, and that there was no identical or similar adequate marine service available from any person operating one or more Canadian ships.

The purpose of this application is to add either New Glasgow or Pictou as the last stop of the aforementioned 6-day cruise and to extend the duration of that cruise by one day.

The Agency has examined the matter and has determined, pursuant to subsection 8(1) of the Coasting Trade Act, that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to provide the service or perform the activities described in the application, and that there is no identical or similar adequate marine service available from any person operating one or more Canadian ships.

This determination will be provided to the Minister of National Revenue for any necessary action as provided for in the Coasting Trade Act.

This Decision does not constitute an authority to commence operations in respect of the service for which application has been made.
