Message from the Chair for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - 2024
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked every year on December 3rd. This day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
This year’s theme is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future". This reminds us of the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities for all. Full and equal participation in contemporary life is not possible if, because of a disability, you can't get from your home to your work, visit with family and friends, or travel domestically or internationally. Transportation connects us to each other and to the world, and the "us" should include everyone.
At the Canadian Transportation Agency, we are committed to making travel accessible to all and to fostering an inclusive environment where every individual is valued and empowered. We recognize that accessibility and inclusivity are not just goals but ongoing commitments that require our continuous effort and dedication.
To really advance accessibility, partnerships are needed both domestically and internationally, as well as between industry, persons with disabilities and international organizations alike. Engagement with persons with disabilities is, and always will be, at the heart of improving accessibility. We believe strongly in the principle “Nothing about us without us”.
Just yesterday, I participated in the Joint International Civil Aviation Organization/Airports Council International/International Air Transportation Association Symposium on Accessibility in International Civil Aviation. This Symposium sought to facilitate dialogue on the transportation of persons with disabilities. Through the event we also continued to work with our partners in supporting ICAO to develop a comprehensive accessibility strategy for international aviation. The Strategy will be an important step in framing the vision and a path forward.
I am encouraged by the discussions that were had and I invite you to read my remarks from this event.
Today, I would like to reaffirm the importance of advancing accessibility in transportation so that all passengers can have access to a safe, reliable and dignified travel.
