APPLICATION by Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks Limited, pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence to use the "MAERSK RESPONDER", for cable laying.

APPLICATION

Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks Limited applied, through its Canadian representative, for a licence to use the "MAERSK RESPONDER", a Danish cable laying ship, to install the Greenland Connect submarine cable system off the east coast of Canada, exclusively in the continental shelf zone, commencing on July 10, 2008 and ending on July 31, 2008.

ISSUE

Is there a suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity?

FACTS AND DETERMINATION

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry and no Canadian ships were offered. Therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity.

The Agency is providing this determination to the Minister of Public Safety to consider whether to issue the licence. This Decision is not an authority to operate.
