October 28, 2013

APPLICATION by Franklin and Frobisher Travel Services, pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence.

File No.:
W9125/13-05972

APPLICATION

Franklin and Frobisher Travel Services applied for a licence to use the “KEWEENAW STAR”, an American passenger ship, to transport passengers from Sault Ste. Marie to Little Current, Killarney, Tobermory and Collingwood, Ontario; and from Collingwood to Tobermory, Killarney, Little Current and Sault Ste. Marie, commencing September 1 and ending October 15, 2014.

ISSUES

Is there a suitable Canadian ship available to provide the service? Is there an identical or similar adequate marine service available from any person operating one or more Canadian ships?

FACTS AND DETERMINATIONS

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry and no Canadian ships were offered. Therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to provide the service, and that there is no identical or similar adequate marine service available from any person operating one or more Canadian ships.

The Agency is providing these determinations to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to consider whether to issue the licence. This Decision is not an authority to operate.
