The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has issued an administrative monetary penalty of $55,000 against WestJet for two violations of the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (ATPDR) related to its obligations of providing services to persons with a disability.
This penalty is for incidents that occurred in October and November 2023.
On October 11, 2023 at Dublin Airport, WestJet failed to permit a passenger with a disability to board in advance of other passengers, even though they had made a request for assistance with boarding, locating their passenger seat, transferring between their mobility aid and their seat, and storing their carry-on baggage.
Similarly on November 18, 2023 at San Cabos Airport, WestJet failed to permit a passenger with a disability to board in advance of other passengers, even though they had made a request for assistance with boarding, locating their passenger seat, transferring between their mobility aid and their seat, and storing their carry-on baggage.
These contraventions relate to paragraph 34(1)(a) of the ATPDR.
WestJet has 30 days to request a review before the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada.
